  1. In Candide rape often happens. Rape is mentioned several times in the story happening to young women. This issue still happens today. Rape often happens to young girls today without anyone stepping in to stop it. In the story many times there are people around when someone is being raped and no one try's to stop it. This issue of rape in the story also happens in society today.

  2. The philosophy of being optomistic I think is still in use today. Many people say that thinking positive thoughts makes for a good outlook on life. That by being positive good things will happen. Well life will go on either way if you are negative or positive. Awful things happen to Pangloss but he stayed positive, and for Martin, he met Candide the money machine but he was still pessimistic.

  3. In Candide people are hung for falsely accused crimes. In today's world people are falsely accused of crimes that they did not commit but yet they still have to suffer the repercussions. Voltaire mocks the government in the story by punishing the innocent just like in society when the innocent is falsely accused.

  4. In the story when Candide receives his fortune in Eldorado he becomes very powerful. Candide can talk his way out of things by bribing people with money. The same thing happens today in many things like government and trying to sale things. It will also happen when people are trying to get a better outcome.

  5. I think the hypocrisy of religion is still something you might see in today’s society. Religious leaders have been caught in heinous acts still to this day, just as in Candide, although Voltaire does not condemn the everyday religious believer. Also in the book religious leaders did horrendous acts against those who do not follow them and I think that still happens today to a certain extent.

  6. Both in candide and in real life really terrible events happen to good people. They didn't deserve it or ask for it to happen in any way. They had to try and move past everything that happened but they still talked about it because they wanted to feel pitied, I feel like a lot of people do that.

  7. In Candide Voltaire show the foolishness of the squandering of wealth which is a common problem in today's society. When Candide accumulates any wealth he does not take care of it. He either gets it stolen, pays way to much for something, or just hands it away like it's nothing such as in the case of Paquette and the clergy man. This can be seen in today's society in how people who can not afford to waste money go to casinos and spend that weeks grocery money in hope of winning which is not likely or buy other things that are not necessities while neglecting the important things. Voltaire believes in rational thought and whether it's gambling, religious persecution, or unwarranted optimism throughout the book mocks these subject I'm sure he would also have alot to say about our society today.

  8. Voltaire shows the extreme complication of relationships throughout Candide. For example, the fickleness of Cunegonde while Candide kept chasing her, yet in the end he only married her out of duty because her beauty was gone. Another example is how the girls running from the monkeys mourned their death.
Complicated relationships are still much the same today, though society has different expectations. There is always a constant ebb and flow of emotions, more so in young adults.

  9. I think the power of money and wealth is still to this day a big issue in society. When Candide acquires a fortune in El dorado, it looks as if the worst of his problems might be over. But, Candide is more unhappy as a wealthy man than a poor one. I believe this is were Voltaire mocks the rich. In today’s society some of the wealthiest people are some of the most miserable.

  10. Candide thinks that all of his issues can be solved by money. In society today, many people still have the same opinion. In today's world, many people think that the perfect life is a life with an abundance of wealth and money. Like the story Candide, most people think that money is easiest way to power and happiness.

  11. Voltaire proves that ignorance leads to downfall. Candide himself goes through tragedy after tragedy from his ignorance to the world. Today ignorance is still a problem. Many wars have been fought because of one's ignorance to except another. And those people will fail in life. Then die.

  12. In Candide Voltaire mocks the government. This happens today when someone disagrees with what the government has done. People today feel they can do better then the government although they do not want to became that involved and do it. When people disagree they talk more then take action, similar to what Voltaire was doing when he wrote Candide.

  13. Candide is abused as a child. Child abuse happens everyday all over the world. I think Voltaire is trying to tie Candides abuse to modern day parents who take advantage of there kids by beating them or raping them. Rape also plays a huge role in Candide, like it does today.

  14. The naivety of Candide in this story is also represented in today’s world in many different aspects. Candide believes anything he is told and accepts it as true, such as when Pangloss tells him that they live in the best of possible worlds. People today often believe what they hear, without using the time to find out if it is true by themselves.
